A Municipal Utility District, or MUD, is a political subdivision authorized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to provide water, sewage, drainage and other services within the MUD’s boundaries. The North Austin Municipal Utility District #1 focuses on supplying water and treating wastewater. MUDs are tax-collecting entities with a Board of Directors made up of residents elected by residents.
The advantage of having a MUD is that the residents are able to elect a Board that will collect taxes and put that money towards resources and infrastructure that is most valuable to the residents. The Board is required to act in the best interests of the residents. This gives MUDs a local advantage.
The Board has monthly meetings usually held on the third Wednesday of every month at 6:00pm. They hold a meeting on the Monday before the regular meeting to go over bills and invoices in detail to prepare for the regular meeting.
In addition, the Board may hold special meetings if circumstances warrant. Agendas are posted at the County courthouse a minimum of 72 hours before the meeting’s scheduled time. Board meetings are held at the Rattan Creek Community Center:
