Freezing Temperatures are expected this winter – Here are some helpful tips to be prepared –
1. Know where your water shutoff is located and how to disconnect it. North Austin MUD #1 recommends you always try to shut off your water at your property owner’s cutoff valve first. For most homes in our service area, the property owner’s shutoff valve is on your side of the water meter at the water meter box near the street. You may need a water meter key to open the meter box. These keys can be purchased at most hardware stores.
2. Keep out cold air & winterize unheated spaces. Also keep garage doors closed for the duration of the freeze.
3. Insulate pipes in unheated areas of your home. This includes your attic or garage. Also check manufacturer recommendations for your tanked and tankless water heaters.
4. Turn off outside faucets and remove all connected garden hoses and wrap the exposed spigots with towels or a Styrofoam insulator.
5. Turn off and drain any automatic sprinkler systems.
6. Turn off and drain or continuously run any pool equipment based on manufacturer recommendations.
7. If you plan to be away during a time when freezing temperatures are possible, turn off your water at your property owner shut off valve, drain water from your system and set your thermostat to 65 degrees or higher.
